Writer in Residence Amanda Boyden’ first novel, Pretty Little Dirty, was released by Vintage/Random House as a lead title in March, 2006. The San Francisco Chronicle wrote, “Look closely. Amanda Boyden, a creative writing professor [sic] at the University of New Orleans, has made a significant contribution to the advancement of the picaresque novel genre. Glorious, modern, satirical and funny… a first novel of complex truth and beauty.” Publishers Weekly described the novel, a reinterpretation of the Cupid and Psyche myth set against the backdrop of the early ‘80s Los Angeles punk scene, as a “winning coming-of-age saga…told with candor and aptitude…This novel gets the complexity of childhood friendships dead right, as well as their importance in shaping who one becomes.” A winner of the Henry Miller Award from nerve.com, Pretty Little Dirty continues to stir it up, appearing in articles from New York magazine, the New York Times, and elsewhere. Amanda is a graduate of the UNO MFA in fiction as well as a recipient of an AWP Intro Award for fiction while writing under the guidance of Rick Barton, Joanna Leake, and Jim Knudsen. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous venues, including ThirdCoast, Globe and Mail, Mid-American Review, and Sonora Review. Publishers Weekly, April 2, 2007, reported the sale of Amanda’s second novel, tentatively titled L’Enfant Terrible and slated for release in autumn, 2008, on a preempt to Random House, to be published in hardcover by Pantheon and following in softcover by Vintage. Set in New Orleans in the year between hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, the novel follows the lives of four families living Uptown on the same block.
