Ms. Allison ArnoldMS. ALLISON ARNOLD

Retained Instructor,
English Placement Test Coordinator
MA, University of Kentucky, 1999

Allison Arnold's graduate work at the University of Kentucky allowed her to explore her interests in women's studies, in regional literature, and in semiotics. She combined these interests in her thesis, in which she explored the relationships among gender roles, the Western, and the issue of space in film by looking at the 1991 Ridley Scott film Thelma & Louise. While she enjoyed these studies very much, she found a greater love while in graduate school: teaching.

As a graduate student, Ms. Arnold taught several composition courses and discovered that being in the classroom rewarded her more than she had previously thought possible. After finishing her degree, she continued teaching, first at the University of Kentucky and then at Lexington Community College. She brought this teaching experience to the University of New Orleans in the fall of 2000.

At UNO, Ms. Arnold focuses on teaching composition, where she feels that she can have the greatest impact on students. The students here are hungry for knowledge; they appreciate being challenged to think abstractly, to analyze, and to argue. "Their hunger is one I can relate to, having come from a less than ideal K-12 school system." Of course, Ms. Arnold also enjoys teaching literature classes, and when granted the opportunity, she often continues to explore her interests in regional and women's literature.
