Retained Instructor Dr Janet Barnwell has lived, worked and played in New Orleans for most of her life, and she considers the city the most interesting place to be in the United States. It’s not just the cultural diversity or the music that stands out, but it is also certain special qualities of character that many New Orleanians share: people endure a lot, yet they remain optimistic even in the most dire circumstances, and people are creative and easy going, yet they are also steadfast with their beliefs and implacably loyal. Dr Barnwell studied English at Emory University where she earned a B.A. and at UNO where she earned a M.A. After a stint working for a New Orleans Mediation firm, she returned to Louisiana State University where she focused on American fiction and British Literature. Her well received dissertation entitled, “Narrative Patterns of Racism and Resistance in the Work of William Faulkner” focuses on how Faulkner’s experiences as a boy and as a young man shaped his fiction. Most notably, the dissertation theorizes that there is a clear connection between a real life lynching that occurred when Faulkner was a boy in Oxford, Mississippi, and the fictional depictions of lynching that are portrayed in many of his short stories and novels. Dr. Barnwell lives with her husband, Guerry Smith, a sports writer, and their cat, Baby Kitty, close to City Park. |
