MS. SARAH DeBACHER

Instructor
MFA, University of New Orleans

Sarah DeBacher received her MFA in Creative Writing from UNO in 2004, and her BA in English from the College of Wooster in Ohio in 1997.  She taught at Tulane University before joining the full-time faculty at UNO in 2005.  Beginning in the Spring of 2008, Ms. DeBacher will serve as the UNO Transfer Proficiency Exam Coordinator.

A member of the Freshman Writing Program Advisory Committee, Ms. DeBacher values highly her work as a composition teacher and her service to UNO’s freshman writing students.  Central to her writing instruction is her belief that students write best when they care about their subjects, and when their instructors and peers express enthusiasm for their work and progress.  As a result, all of her writing students generate topics that interest them (both within their academic field of study and within their personal interests and home-communities), and all of them enjoy regular and ample feedback from both their peers and from Ms. DeBacher, herself.  Her students can expect to write often and a lot, and to get plenty of support through regular one-on-one conferences.

In addition to teaching all of the courses in the freshman writing series (including 1157 and 1158 for Student Support Services), Ms. DeBacher also teaches Introduction to the Short Story and Novel (2238), Introduction to Fiction Writing (2161), and Major American Writers (2041).  During the summer months, she teaches online writing courses for the Johns-Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth, and she also serves as a scholar for the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities PRIME TIME for Family Literacy Program.

Originally from Atlanta, Ms. DeBacher (along with her husband) is currently renovating a home in Holy Cross, where she is the Website Committee Chair for the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association, and a contributing writer to the HCNA website, www.helpholycross.org
