He received his M.F.A. in Fiction from McNeese State University and later received his Ph.D. from LSU. His primary area of study is early modern British literature, but he has taught a variety of literature and composition classes at a variety of schools, including McNeese State, LSU, Tulane and UNO. He has been the recipient of a number of writing and teaching awards, including a dissertation fellowship award and awards for fiction, teaching and mentoring. His scholarly interests are in British literature and British social history, particularly representations of criminality.
