DR. ALAN GRAVANO Instructor I have an MFA in Poetry and an M.A. and Ph. D. in English Literature from the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida. My dissertation, “Transfiguration of the Discarded: Consumption and Waste in Wallace Stevens, A. R. Ammons, Don DeLillo, and Martin Scorsese,” investigates the relations among fragments, ruins, and waste. I argue that waste influences the formation of identity, and explore how Stevens’s “The Man on the Dump,” Ammons’s Garbage, DeLillo’s Underworld, and Scorsese’s The Departed reappropriate the excluded and the discarded objects of consumer culture and recycle waste in their social commentaries and even, at times, transform them into works of art. My teaching interests include English composition, creative writing, and literature. As a graduate student, I won the 2000 Alfred Boas Prize in Poetry. My poetry has appeared in Review Americana: A Literary Journal and Gulf Stream: South Florida’s Literary Current. While at the University of Miami, I was the poetry editor of their literary magazine, Mangrove, and the managing editor of the James Joyce Literary Supplement. I currently teach composition and literature at the University of New Orleans.
