Professor and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Susan Krantz is a Professor of English at UNO. Before her appointment as Dean, she served as Associate Dean and as Associate Chair and Undergraduate Coordinator of the Department of English. She received her Ph.D. in English Literature from Tulane University in 1985, her M.A. from Mississippi State University in 1975, and her B.A. from Newcomb College in 1973. Before coming to UNO, Dr. Krantz taught English at Tulane University, Mississippi State University, and the University of South Carolina. During a leave of absence, she served as Director of Social Sciences and Humanities at Durham Technical and Community College in North Carolina. At UNO, Dr. Krantz has taught a wide variety of Composition and Literature courses, from the freshman through the graduate level, not only on our main lakefront campus, but also at our satellite locations and at one of our European program locations in Austria. She is a past recipient of the UNO Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award, and she continues to teach Shakespeare whenever she can. Dr. Krantz's research involves Early Modern drama and culture, especially Shakespeare and his contemporaries. She has published and presented papers on various dramatists and the historical contexts of their plays as well as on theater and stage history. She is an associate editor of the journal Explorations in Renaissance Culture and past President of the South-Central Renaissance Association. Her secondary research interests include curriculum development and pedagogy, and she is a member of the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Higher Education. Much of Dr. Krantz's time as Dean is devoted to improving undergraduate education at UNO and extending UNO’s role in the region. She is involved with recruitment and retention of students and served as the Coordinator of Retention and Student Persistence. She is especially interested in promoting the value of the Liberal Arts in the larger community. She was named one of CityBusiness’ Women of the Year in 2004, and was invited to participate in the Metropolitan Leadership Forum in 2005. Since Katrina, she has devoted herself to rebuilding UNO, and especially to developing ways that the College of Liberal Arts can contribute to the artistic, cultural and economic recovery of New Orleans through uniting neighborhoods and celebrating and preserving our rich heritage.
