Assistant Professor Dr. Doreen Piano began her teaching career as an instructor of developmental writing at a community college after she received her masters' degree. Since then, she has taught first year and sophomore writing, women’s studies, grammar/usage, and the humanities at Austin Community College, University of Houston, and Georgia Institute of Technology. At UNO, Dr. Piano teaches graduate courses in Composition Studies and Modern Rhetorical Theory as well as undergraduate writing courses. Since Hurricane Katrina, her undergraduate writing courses have been concerned with social, environmental, and political issues relating to New Orleans. Dr. Piano's research focuses on the intersection of feminist studies, rhetorical and writing theory, and cultural studies. Her interest in writing communities outside the academy has led her to study the material and textual practices of contemporary subcultures through a rhetorical lens. She is currently working on a manuscript that investigates the literacy practices of a third wave feminist subculture engaged in producing alternative discourse through the use of high and low tech media. Additionally, in the post-Katrina landscape of New Orleans, she has become increasingly interested in the various manifestations of public writing and memorializing occurring in various neighborhoods around the city.
