Instructor Matt Roberts earned his B.A. in Creative Writing from Louisiana State University in 1993 and an M.A. in English from Colorado State University in 2001, where he focused on Composition/Rhetoric and nonfiction studies. Courses taught include first year writing, upper division argument classes, technical writing, and creative nonfiction workshops. A Pushcart Prize nominee, Matt’s career as a writer officially began in 1989 when he won the high school division of the Light the Bridges essay contest in celebration of the lighting of the Crescent City Connection. Matt’s work has appeared in The Chattahoochee Review, Many Mountains Moving, Matter, Isotope, Post Road, Ectotone, Ninth Letter, and on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. He has chaired or participated in panels at a variety of conferences and was a general participant in Susan Orlean’s nonfiction workshop at the 2005 Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference. Matt is also a founding editor of the new literary journal, The Normal School (launching in Fall 2008). Matt has worked in a sports massage therapy clinic, a nature store in the mall, slinging java, selling lost shakers of salt in the French Quarter, and a back-breaking summer of trail crew in the foothills of Colorado. For kicks and giggles, Matt watches documentaries, hikes, bikes, canoes, chases his kids around, and stares at bushes and trees through a pair of binoculars in the hope of seeing the crayola-colored plumage of birds. Matt is currently working on a number of projects that involve birds, both real and imagined.
