Graduate Studies in EnglishGraduate AssistantshipsThree types of graduate assistantships are available: teaching positions in the Freshman Composition program; tutoring positions in the Writing Center; and research assistantships with individual faculty members. To qualify for a teaching position, students must first complete eighteen hours of credit toward the masters degree, including ENGL 6281 (Composition Studies: Theory and Practice). Each first-year teaching assistant receives guidance from a faculty mentor and the Coordinator of Freshman English. Assistantship stipends are available in two amounts: $8,100 for students who commit themselves to a teaching load of three courses per academic year; $5,400 for students who teach two courses per academic year; and $4,900 for students who work 12 hours a week as non-teaching assistants. All graduate assistants also receive full tuition waivers, valued for out-of-state students at approximately $10,228 per academic year. A student who has held an assistantship for an academic year pays only token tuition during the following summer term. Assistantships are normally renewable for a second year.
