Studies in English

An Overview

Undergraduate Studies

The Department of English offers a four-year undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition, a Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major or minor in English is available through the College of Education. Students with any major may also choose to minor in English. The department offers courses in American literature, African-American literature, New Orleans literature, British, Commonwealth, and Postcolonial literature, creative writing, professional writing and editing, and journalism.  Cross-listed courses in Women's Studies, International Studies, and Africana Studies are also offered regularly.

Graduate Studies

The Department offers graduate studies in English leading to the Master of Arts in English or the Master of Arts in Teaching English. Also at the graduate level, the Department offers the Creative Writing Workshop, an interdisciplinary M.F.A. program with concentrations in screenwriting, playwriting, poetry writing and fiction writing; these courses are cross-listed with the Department of English, which provides most of the program's faculty. Other programs closely affiliated with the Department are the UNO Women's Studies Program and the Greater New Orleans Writing Project.

Faculty

The English faculty in UNO's English Department is committed to superior teaching and advising. Small upper-level writing and literature classes (18-30 students) enhance student-teacher contact both in and out of class. English faculty have won University Outstanding Teaching Awards repeatedly in recent years. In 1994, the department was commended for the quality of its training and supervising of instructors and nineteen teaching assistants. Graduate faculty are active scholars; critical studies, collections of creative work and textbooks by numerous department faculty appear each year.

Literary Activities

There are several extracurricular literary activities, including writing for Ellipsis, UNO's literary magazine, or for the Driftwood, UNO's weekly student newspaper. Through various agencies, including an active English Graduate Organization (EGO), world-recognized authors and scholars are brought to campus for readings, classroom visits, and workshop instruction.

Careers

By majoring in English, students gain critical understanding of imaginative writing and develop sensitivity to the uses of languages while honing skills in analysis, research and communication. These skills prepare students for careers in education, professional writing, publishing, business, journalism, law, government, and library science. The Department's Internship in English Program allows students to receive credit while working in these and other areas.
