Internship in English
Internships in English are writing or editing internships, with businesses, agencies, industries, or publication offices in the local area. Most of them do not pay, but offer good experience, training and references. In most cases, you will earn 3 hours of credit for working 8-10 hours a week for the semester, attending a few discussions on campus, and writing a term paper of 6-10 pages. In addition, you may be able to repeat your internship the following semester, at the same firm or a different one.
Examples of offices where we've set up internships in the past:
- A U.S. forestry office that edits scientific reports and papers
- New Orleans magazines like Gambit or Cultural Vistas
- The public affairs and the planning offices at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
- The UNO Information Services office, which produces news releases, etc.
- A state representative's office, requiring letter writing, etc.
- A technical firm that publishes equipment manuals and proposals
- A trade magazine like the Port Record
- A sports organization like the New Orleans Zephyrs--in marketing writing
Advanced courses in writing, journalism experience, and past experience writing at work are all useful. What we mainly require is good writing ability.
